How to Replace Your Windshield Wiper Blades

What You'll Need

New wiper blades (bring your vehicle year, make, and model to the auto parts store — driver and passenger blades are often different lengths)
1

Buy the right blades for your vehicle

Stop by any auto parts store and tell them your year, make, and model. They'll look up the correct blade size for both the driver and passenger sides — they're frequently different lengths. Many stores will even install them for free, but it's just as easy to do yourself.

2

Lift the wiper arm away from the windshield

Gently pull the wiper arm up and away from the glass until it locks in a raised position. Be careful — if it snaps back without a blade attached, it can crack your windshield. Lift one arm at a time.

3

Find and press the release tab on the blade

Where the blade meets the arm, look for a small plastic tab or button on the underside of the connector. Press or squeeze it — this releases the blade from the hook on the wiper arm.

4

Slide or pivot the old blade off

With the tab pressed, pivot or slide the blade down and off the arm hook. Note how it was attached before you fully remove it — it'll make installing the new one a lot easier.

5

Attach the new blade

Line up the hook on the wiper arm with the connector on the new blade. Push it upward until you hear or feel a distinct click. Give it a gentle tug to confirm it's locked in place.

6

Lower the arm back to the windshield and repeat on the other side

Gently lower the arm back down onto the glass — don't let it drop. Repeat the process for the passenger side. Some vehicles also have a rear wiper; check if yours needs replacing too.

7

Test them before you drive

Turn your wipers on with a little washer fluid. Watch for streaking, skipping, or squeaking. A smooth, clean wipe means you're good to go.
