5 Signs Your Brakes Need Service (Don't Ignore #3)
By Pablo Zaldivar · Junior's Auto Repair, Twin Falls, ID
Brakes don't fail overnight. They give you warning signs — if you know what to listen and feel for. Here are the five most common signals that it's time to bring your vehicle in.
1. Squealing or Squeaking Noise
Most brake pads have a small metal wear indicator that creates a high-pitched squeal when the pad gets low. This is by design — it's your car telling you it's time for new pads. Don't ignore it.
2. Grinding Sound
Grinding usually means the brake pad material is completely gone and metal is contacting metal. This damages your rotors and turns a $150 pad replacement into a $400+ rotor job. Act fast.
3. Vibration When Braking
If your steering wheel or brake pedal vibrates when you stop, your rotors are likely warped. This is often caused by heat buildup from aggressive braking or worn pads left too long.
4. Pulling to One Side
If your car pulls left or right when braking, one brake caliper may be sticking or a brake hose could be failing. This is a safety issue — get it checked immediately.
5. Soft or Spongy Pedal
A brake pedal that goes too far to the floor, or feels soft and spongy, may indicate air in the brake lines or a failing master cylinder. Do not drive this vehicle until it's inspected.
